It’s Gonna be a Shalom Filled Summer!

The most recent city-wide Shalom zone meeting was held on Wednesday, May 6th at River Edge in Macon.  We had a very large turnout and heard from several guest speakers. Sheknita Davis of the Middle Georgia Regional Commission spoke on the various services the commission offers to the community including the Area Agency on Aging, technology services, and workforce development. Wanzina Jackson, Macon/Bibb’s Manager of Economic Community Development, spoke about blight in Macon/Bibb and how the Mayor’s office is planning on addressing condemned and run-down properties.  Monica Swayn spoke on substance abuse workshops, and Anthony Hill of Well Care elaborated on a new partnership between Well Care and the Frank Austin Center to bring health related services to the 7 Shalom Zones.  Finally, Travis Blackwell announced the new Shalom Zone training schedule that will happen this summer.  All 7 Zones must be represented by community volunteers during training this summer. This training will not only be fun and engaging, but most importantly, participants will learn the Shalom Zone approach to community development. We heard at the May 6th meeting that residents want to see change in their neighborhoods sooner than later. Getting on board with the Shalom Zones program is the best way citizens can positively impact their own neighborhoods and make the difference they want to see.  The dates for the training include six group trainings, two computer lab trainings to improve technology skills, and a commissioning ceremony of the volunteers who complete the training. The dates are as follows:

Saturday May 30th

Saturday June 13th

Friday evening June 26th

Saturday June 27th

Saturday July 11th

Friday evening July 24th

Saturday July 25th

Saturday August 8th

Saturday August 15th

If you live or know someone who lives in Lynmore Estates, Village Green, Pleasant Hill, Bellevue, Bealls Hill, east Macon, or Unionville please consider attending the Shalom Zones training this summer.  You can make a difference in your own neighborhood!!
