Will Allen, Founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc., visited Macon on October 8th to attend our city-wide Shalom Zone meeting and discuss with Zone residents the possibility of urban farming in Macon. Mr. Allen has become recognized as perhaps the preeminent voice and practitioner for urban agriculture in America and throughout the world. His urban farm in Milwaukee hosts over 20,000 visitors annually. They employ 100 people and also train 1,000 beginning farmers each year. His Milwaukee farm, the last remaining farm in the area, produces hundreds of fruit and vegetable varieties including specialty micro-greens, and raises over 1000,000 fish and millions of worms used to produce soil. Their focuses include organic farming, composting, and growing fish and edible plants in a closed loop system all with the goal of bringing healthy, locally grown, organic food to the local community, including the school system. Mr. Allen gave an extensive presentation about the way Growing Power does urban farming including information about his partnership farming programs in Chicago and throughout the world. Mr. Allen discussed the wealth of existing opportunity for urban farming in Macon and pledged his expertise as support as we explore this possibility for development. This presentation came on the heels of a donation from Wellcare to support the community gardens in the Shalom Zones in Macon. Shalom Zone residents are very excited about getting this initiative going in Macon. Stay tuned to this movement!
