Shalom Zones and Wellcare Partner for Community Gardens

Shalom Zone Coordinator Frank Austin and Mayor Robert Reichert accepted a donation of $15,000 on behalf of the ten Shalom Zones in Macon on Monday from Wellcare to sponsor the Zones’ community gardens initiative. Wellcare helped with the initial garden project in the Villiage Green Zone and is now eager to help the other nine zones get their own community gardens up and running. This new initiative in the Shalom Zones is the brain child of Community Partnership Board Members Greg Glover and Frank Austin who heard community members expressing a desire for gardens in their neighborhoods. The goal of the initiative to help residents in the Shalom Zones to take control of their own health by learning more about healthy eating practices and how to grow their own fruits and vegetables in their own neighborhoods. The initiative will also encourage physical activity, business management skills, and neighborhood pride. Children and youth will be encouraged to participate in the gardens as well learning about healthy eating, earth science and biology, and responsibility through farming. Real change is happening in the Shalom Zones and Community Partnership could not be happier for the newly commissioned community leaders as they take on this new project in their zones .
